Written Testimony
Citizen input on potential legislation is a crucial part of the legislative process. Weigh in on the issues and bills that matter to you and your family by providing your input, experience, and related expertise.
Template for written testimony:
- Address the committee
Members of the [NAME] Committee,
- Introduce yourself
My name is [NAME], I live in [DISTRICT #], and (if applicable) I am [YOUR TITLE AND ORGANIZATION]”
- Clearly present your position: “I support” or “I oppose” followed by bill number.
- Explain your position. Share your personal story clearly and concisely .
The most powerful and persuasive aspect of public testimony is personal experience because stories help legislators see how policy affects real life. Stories can open doors to new perspectives and alliances. Also include factual arguments and/or data as evidence to support your position.
- Ask for specific action: “I urge you to vote in favor of…” or “against” [bill number]
- Thank the committee for their service to the state of North Dakota and for their time deliberating on the issue at hand.
