Government Cash Handout Scheme Form Now Available

Following complaints that last year’s cash handout scheme was too complicated, the government has set forward a new and improved scheme for 2019. The form for this year’s handout is now publicly available from a range of government offices as well as on the government’s website.

The ‘Caring and Sharing’ Scheme will distribute up to HK$4,000 to Hong Kong residents aged 18 and above, on the condition that they do not receive any government allowances, nor own property. Additionally, individuals benefiting from tax breaks will only be liable to receive the difference between HK$4,000 and the tax break.

The government aimed to simplify the application process, requiring only essential documentation from applicants. A completed application form must also have an attached copy of your Hong Kong Identity Card and a copy of a proof of your address that was issued in the last 3 months, as well as a copy of an ATM card, or the first page of a monthly bank statement or bank passbook. These documents can then be submitted by post or deposited at a range of Drop-in boxes. If the application is submitted through mail, make sure to pay the necessary postage, and write down a return address on the back of the envelope.

You will be informed once your application has been received, and again when it has been processed. The payment will be made directly into your bank account. If you do not have a local bank account under your name, you are also able to collect a cash check in person at the WFAO.

Applications for the cash handout scheme will begin from February 1 until April 30 2019.
